India is a land of festivals. We celebrate festivals with great enthusiasm. Festivals bring happiness, joy and add colour to our lives.
Pongal Festival : Pongal is a harvest festival celebrated in Tamil Nadu which lasts for three days. On the first day, people worship the rain god. On the second day, people worship the sun god and on the third day, people worship the cow.
Holi Festival : The Festival of Holi is the celebration of colours. Holi is a spring festival, celebrated in the month of March. People sing, dance and play with colours on this day.
Ganesh-chaturthi Festival : Ganesh Chaturthi is the festival devoted to the elephant god Ganesha.. This festival is celebrated in Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. People bring idols of Lord Ganesha at home and worship it. They also make sweets called Modak and offer them to Lord Ganesha.
Dussehra Festival : Dussehra Festival marks the victory of Lord Rama over the demon king Ravana. Dussehra is celebrated twenty days before Deepawali. Huge Effigies of Ravana, his brother Kumbhkaran and son Meghnatha are burnt in big grounds. It is also called the Vijay Dashmi.
Diwali Festival : Diwali is the festivals of Lights. On this day, people worship goddess Lakshmi. People decorate their houses and wear new clothes. They also exchange sweets. Children burst crackers.
Christmas Festival : Christmas is celebrated as the birthday of Jesus Christ. It is celebrated on 25th December every year. Churches are decorated beautifully. People decorate Christmas trees and exchange gifts with loved ones.
Gurupurab Festival : Gurupurab is celebrated to mark the birthdays of the ten Sikh Gurus. Gurudwaras are decorated beautifully. People wear new clothes and visit Gurudwaras.
Eid Festival : Eid is a festival that marks the end of the Ramzan. Ramzan is the holy month in which Muslims keep fast. On the day of the festival, Muslims gather in large groups at the mosques and offer their prayers or Namaz. Also a special sweet dish, called Sewaiyan is cooked.
Onam Festival : Onam is the biggest harvest festival of Kerala. People wear new clothes and decorate their houses. Boat races are held and snake boats race is a special attraction.
